Adventures Ahoy! A Day at the Beach!

Adventures Ahoy! A Day at the Beach!

I've always been reluctant to have a proper day out at the beach - swimsuits and all - at one of our local beaches in Essex. Growing up no where near a beach means a trip to the beach isn't a natural choice but yesterday with the weather looking glorious we went for it!
We arrived in Clacton and headed for the pier. I thought a turn on the rides would be a real treat but this was quickly shunned as the beach was the only place my two wanted to be.
Setting up camp we started with sand castles which soon became holes in the sand which we filled with water from the sea. My eldest watched with bemusement as the water "disappeared" soaked up by the sand. He then trekked to the sea to collect more water to repeat the process. A simple science experiment at the seaside.
Repeating things became the theme of the day as we headed for the sea. Over and over the mini waves the children jumped, shrieking with delight!! Lunch time beckoned and the dread of getting two pre-schoolers cleaned up filled me with a little dread. However, I'd brought a secret ingredient with me - talcum powder. I had popped this in the bag at the very last minute and what a life saver it was. I sprinkled it all over the children (and my own) sandy feet, hands and legs and low and behold the sand rubbed off on an instant leaving dry, soft skin! Perfect!!!
After lunch at a nearby pub I was sure the rides would be the afternoon activity but a return to the beach was the only thing they had eyes for. We took the land train down the beach a little way for a change of scenery. We spotted beach huts and a much quieter spot on the beach. Again the sea was the place to be and the waves were jumped over and pebbles were thrown in the sea as the tide slowly came in.
We headed to the car with ice cream in hand; a quick stop off at the arcade and a turn on the a lot machines finished the day perfectly. I thought the little one might burst with joy when, by some stroke of luck, we won a Finding Nemo toy on the grabber machine! (I genuinely thought no one ever won anything from those machines)
After a simple day at the beach we all came home with the sort of feeling I thought was only possible on holiday! Sun tan lotion, fresh sea air and sand and water between your toes is a magical combination and we can find it just down the road!!
